Who We Are
A community-rooted team working for a more resilient Horn of Africa.

Pastoralist-rooted. Evidence-driven. Community-led.

We are a community-rooted organisation committed to strengthening pastoralist livelihoods and governance in the Horn of Africa. From cross-border peace collaborations to rangeland management and participatory research, we support communities in shaping the decisions that affect their land, mobility, and survival.

Our Vision

A world where pastoralists’ rights, needs, and aspirations are fully recognized, protected, and fulfilled.
We envision societies in which pastoralist communities live with dignity — secure in their land, supported in their mobility, and respected as key contributors to cultural, economic, and environmental systems across the Horn of Africa.

Our Mission

To strengthen the resilience of pastoralist communities by fostering cooperation, supporting sustainable resource management, and advancing local knowledge to drive inclusive development and protect pastoralists’ rights.
Our mission is to empower pastoralist communities through dialogue, evidence, and action — helping them safeguard their resources, influence policies, and build systems that support peace, mobility, and long-term wellbeing.

Values and Guiding Principles

Our work is anchored in principles shaped by pastoralist experience, indigenous knowledge, and our commitment to justice and dignity. These values guide every partnership, research project, and intervention we support across the borderlands.

Empowerment & Self-Determination

We strengthen community capacity and leadership so pastoralists can define their own priorities, drive solutions, and shape their future on their own terms.

Collaboration & Inclusivity

We work across borders, sectors, and institutions to ensure pastoralists — especially women and youth—are meaningfully included in decisions that affect their land, livelihoods, and mobility.

Sustainability & Resilience

We promote practices that protect natural resources and help communities adapt to environmental, social, and economic change — building long-term resilience in the drylands.

Equity & Justice

We advocate for fairness, equal rights, and equitable access to resources, ensuring that pastoralist communities are protected, respected, and fully recognized in policy and practice.

A Timeline of our Existence

Our journey reflects years of partnership with pastoralist communities—growing from local dialogues to a regional organisation shaping policy, research, and resilience across the Horn of Africa.
JANUARY 2010

Starting the Conversation

We began as an online platform on Facebook and later Twitter, creating space for discussions on Karamoja’s development. The community grew rapidly to 6,000 members, doubling within three years. These conversations shaped our first strategy and led to the maiden Agenda Setting Conference

Becoming an Organization

After nearly two years of open debate on the way forward, we formally registered as Karamoja Development Forum (KDF). Our goal: ensure pastoralists have a voice in development decisions, despite barriers like limited access to technology. Locally, communities called us “the office of the herders.”

Expanding Across Borders

While our work on land rights in Uganda gains traction, our work on land rights in Uganda gained traction, and we began supporting cross-border pastoralists, especially Pokot and Turkana herders. With growing peacebuilding activities and evidence from local practices like Etamam, our work became regional in scope

A New Identity

After a year and a half of transition planning with the Ugandan government, we became Karamoja Herders of the Horn (KHH). This new identity reflects both our roots in Karamoja and our expanded work with pastoralist societies across the Horn of Africa.

Our team

We are a multidisciplinary team of researchers, community organizers, peacebuilders, and development practitioners rooted in the Karamoja – Turkana ecosystem. Our staff combine deep local knowledge with regional and international expertise — working side-by-side with communities, governments, and partners to advance pastoralist rights and resilience.
